Catriona Nic Choinnich

MP3 sound clip
Background

This piece was written in honour of my great grandmother, Catriona Nic Choinnich. Catriona was a talented interpreter of Gaelic song and a tireless promoter of the Gaelic language. She taught all seven of her children to sing and speak in the language of their forefathers. Catriona rarely spoke English and, in fact, would only communicate with her children in her native Hebridean tongue. The inspiration to compose this song came from a recurring dream I have had over the last couple of years. In the dream Catriona is sitting in the old Buffalo Cemetery in Lochalsh, Ontario. She is singing the Gaelic immigrants lament O Horo a song I have never readily associated with the Lewis Settlement. Some time after the first occurrence of this apparition, I discovered that O Horo was in fact in the repertoire of many Bruce County Gaelic singers.
