MRM's Performance

    Windows Dial-Up Networking
By default, Windows 95's network software is configured for communication over a LAN. When using the internet, however, this configuration is very inefficient. To maximize the efficiency, the MTU setting must be changed.

What is the MTU setting? It sets the size of the packets transmitted/ expected. The internet standard is 576, but since Win95 is configured for a LAN the default setting is 1500. Changing the MTU setting to 576 can have a dramatically positive effect on performance.

There are a number of methods for changing the MTU setting. You can do it manually by editing the Win95 registry, or you can use a utility to do it for you.

This software is truly amazing. Some connection speeds doubled after installing PPP-Boost. And for streaming video, some transfer speeds went from 1.8k per sec. to 4.5k per sec.! Pages load quickly and snappy as they should. Don't pass this opportunity by! Use one of the methods of altering the MTU settings on this page!

Be sure to back-up your Windows 95 registry files! If you choose not to, I will not be held accountable for any damages. You can use a utility called cfgback.exe to back up the registry. This file should be located in your windows directory. If it is not, you can download cfgback.zip, which contains the cfgback utility. Though it rarely happens, cfgback has been known to fail at restoring the registry.

PPP-Boost Utility

Many sites offer instructions for manually editing the registry or shareware packages that will do it for you. PPP-Boost is a small freeware utility that allows you to try this technique for yourself. Simply run PPP-Boost, select the recommended settings and reboot your PC.
